Structural Integration for Whole People
The word structure comes from Latin and means building, the arrangement of parts. According to Kant, a structure consists of the positions and connections of the parts of an organism that forms itself according to a unified purpose. Integration - also from Latin - means making complete, incorporating into a unity.
That is the heart of the matter. The goal of Structural Integration is to return the body to its unity. The body is given back its original shape. Structural Integration is thus a holistic form of physical therapy concerned with the long-term correction of incorrect posture. It is a method of restructuring the body.
All too often, unpleasant events, accidents, emotional problems make us lose our equilibrium, make us lose our "shape", so to speak. You have probably experienced this yourself: You had an accident, you fell from your bicycle as a child, you had a fall, you broke your leg or arm. You had years full of worry; you suffered from examination stress. None of these events are extremely serious, and yet they all leave traces. Like the human mind, the body is also shaped by such events and by unresolved issues in our lives. These experiences manifest themselves in our bodies and hamper free movement as a means of living expression. Chronic and acute pain or poor posture force the body into unnatural and uncomfortable positions that make us ill. In course of time, we lose the feel of a healthy body, and health problems begin.
The aim of Structural Integration is to return the whole body to a state of balance, to homeostasis. Through physical therapy, individuals are able to return to their natural posture and perception of the body. They are more relaxed when holding themselves upright, they feel an lightness in walking, sitting or standing, and in other sequences of movement. Structural Integration teaches a form of self-experience in which you not only become aware of your incorrect posture and the tensions connected with it, but also of how those tensions arise.
